June 2006

Greetings from Mistress Amicia Readyman, Incoming Beacon Principal Herald.

I am very excited and honored by the opportunity to serve Meridies in this capacity. There will be many changes in the upcoming months including several office changes as evidenced by the outgoing and incoming letters in this PC. Please take a moment to read each letter and join me in thanking the outgoing officers for their hard work and excellent service. On that note, I would like to thank Sir Cairbre for his years of service to the Beacon’s office.

You will find the new officers’ contact information in Regnum. Please note the changes and welcome them. They are eager to serve and will welcome hearing from you.

There will be a change in the reporting schedule effective June 1st. Local heralds will report MONTLY and all reports should be sent to me. I will be happy to accept them electronically or in paper form. Please provide me with an email address so that I can quickly confirm that I have received your report. My information is listed in Regnum. Please don’t hesitate to email or call me if you have any questions, large or small.

One of my first priorities of office will be the creation of a Heralds’ Roster. I would request that all Heralds At Large contact me. As is my custom, I will be traveling to as many events as is possible. In June, I plan to attend Kingdom Arts and Sciences, Known World Heraldic Symposium, and possibly Border Raids. Please introduce yourself to me whether you are a Herald At Large or are currently holding and office. I look forward to working with each of you.

In Service to Meridies,

September 2006

Greetings unto the Populace of the Marvelous Kingdom of Meridies, from Mistress Amicia Readyman, Beacon Herald. I hope this missive finds you and your compatriots enjoying the autumnal airs of September.

As I am sure you have noticed, there have recently been many changes in the Beacon’s Staff and Heraldry in General in Meridies. I would like to comment on a couple of these changes. Group heralds are now reporting MONTHLY and that change is going very well. My grateful appreciation goes to all the local heralds and group seneschals for assistance in this transition.

I would like to call your attention that the newest personnel addition to the Beacon’s Staff. Guiare mac Guaire is the new Cypher Replacement Deputy and all submissions should now be sent directly to him. His address is in Regnum. Speaking of submissions, Meridies has new submission forms. They are available online at the Kingdom web page PLUS every herald in the kingdom should have received a hard copy of them via U. S. Post. If you didn’t receive a set of the new forms, please, contact me immediately.

Also regarding Beacon Staff positions, with the Crown’s permission, I am creating a new office. This position will be a deputy of the Lantern’s office and they will work closely together as they fulfill the heraldic educational mandate. Additionally, this position will assist in scheduling consultation tables and classes at events. If you would like more information regarding this position, please contact me or THLord Cuhelyn, Lantern Herald. To apply for the position, please, send your letter of application and/or resume to both Beacon and Lantern.

The Beacon Staff will be hosting a Herald’s Social at Fall Coronation. If you are a herald, have ever talked to a herald, have ever been called into court via a herald, or have ever received or painted a scroll, please, come by and join us for a visit. Please, consult the event schedule for the time and place. I look forward to see you there! Oh, and yes, there will be refreshments!

The Bagatelle Herald has requested that I communicate [the Kingdom's] need of award regalia for Awards of Arms, Grants of Arms, and Argent Comets. Please, contact her if you have any questions.

By the time you read this, hopefully, the Great Polling for the new Meridian Populace badges will be completed. Many thanks to all the Heralds and Artists who worked with me on this project with special thanks to Sir Morgan Ironheart, Meridian General and Sir Griffin O’Suaid, Critter Proponent, for their unfailing support and encouragement.

Last but not least, the Shire of Beau Fort has graciously agreed to host a Meridian Heraldic Symposium at their event, Festival of the Golden Lily 8, on February 16-19, 2007. Please, mark your calendars and make your plans to attend. Details will be upcoming soon!

As always, please, let me know if I, or the Beacon Staff, can assist you in any way.

November 2006

Greetings unto the Populace of Meridies from Mistress Amicia Readyman, Beacon Principal Herald.  I hope everyone is enjoying the cooling autumn air, I certainly am.

Meridian Grand Tourney was a resounding success again this year.  My heartfelt thanks to the many heralds who worked long, long, long hours.  Mistress Wuennemon and Lady Thora ran the lists all day with accuracy and precision.  Baron Hywel and THLord Alexander, with assistance from Lord Donovan, heralded the 6 lists, what troopers! THLady Cecily and Lady Gwenwhyvar kept the shield trees up that gave us all such a great visual to keep the action of track, and last but not least thanks Cecila, Aine Connorsdottior, and John Mac Conal for running hundreds of cards to keep the lists moving as quickly as possible.  With so many lists these folks worked long and hard all day long to keep the tournaments going.

In the coming months I hope to address various topics in my letters here in Popular Chivalry.  This month I would like to share some information regarding Personal Heraldic Titles.  As many of you saw at Fall Coronation, Mistress Bronwen o’ Gydweli was granted the right to a personal title.  Many people have asked me since then, “What is that and what does it mean?” Most heraldic titles are a result of holding an office, I am the Beacon Herald, for example.  When I am no longer holding this office I will no longer be the Beacon Herald, someone else will have that title.  What was granted to Mistress Bronwen is the right to select her own PERSONAL heraldic title that she will bear even if she doesn’t hold a heraldic office.  This title will belong to her.  The Crown bestows this right because the title Mistress Bronwen selects will be registered to the Kingdom of Meridies and with the Crown’s permission transferred to Mistress Bronwen.  Personal heraldic titles are granted for long and continuous service to the kingdom and society.  Additionally, when this title is transferred to Mistress Bronwen, I as Beacon will also request that the heraldic rank of Herald Extraordinary be added to her personal title.  This is a rank in heraldry given to a herald as stated by Laurel Sovereign of Arms with the intent “to recognize and reward ‘those heralds who have greatly served the College of Heralds and/or the College of Arms and have achieved the highest level of competency in heraldry.”  I am very pleased to be able to honor Mistress Bronwen’s long years of excellent service to the Heraldic Arts in this way.  Thus concludes our heraldic lesson for this month.

I have enjoyed visiting with many of you at recent events and thank everyone who has taken time to share thoughts or questions with me regarding heraldry in general and heraldry in Meridies.  Please keep those comments coming.  In the next few months I plan to attend Fighters Collegium, Magna Faire, and Knight’s Gambit.  I hope to see you there.

Yours in continued service,

Mistress Amicia

Beacon Principal Herald

December 2006

Warmest greetings unto the fabulous populace of Meridies from Mistress Amicia Readyman, Beacon Principal Herald. I hope this missive finds each of you settling in for a glorious holiday season.

I would like to remind everyone one that reports are due from each group's herald on the 1st of every month. Many heralds are doing a great job of getting their accurate and complete reports to me on time each month. Please, make every effort to report in a timely fashion.

I would like to offer my heartfel thanks to every one who assisted with heraldry at Fall Crown List. The new herald for Gladenfeld, Lord Rowland Baker, did an excellent job with the site heraldry and assisted some on the field as well. THLord Alexander Ravenscroft performed in his usual superb fashion as lead field herald. In addition, he announced the combantants to the Crown and assisted with the Processional using the new order of precedence. Thanks to THLord Mikal Isernfocar for assisting with heraldry on the field and running cards, with help from Fynlay mac Crimmon, of Rivermarch. Thanks to THLady Cecily de Chinon for keeping the shield tree accurately and to THLady Janessia and Duchess Caroline for their moral support and general assistance.

This leads me to this month's topic to add to our heraldic knowledge base: As everyone realizes, keeping the Tourney moving is very important to all concerned - the marshalls, the populace, and the fighters. This is largely dependent on the Keeper of the List and other heralds keeping many balls in the air. To this end, I would ask that everyone carefully consider before approaching the heraldic staff during tournaments. The best intended offer of food, water, or conversation can cause a shuffle of cards and a mixed up tourney, and no one wants that.

I hope your home is joyous during this special season,

Mistress Amicia
